New Mexico
Painting in pure desert was a different experience. On dirt roads in the village of Nambe, I discovered fields of wheat, interesting adobe houses, lines of cottonwood trees along streams, large rock formations resembling castles and the farmyard outside my studio. New Mexico scenery is panoramic; wide open spaces separated me from distant mesas, mountains, pine forests and horizon. Most dramatic of all (continued after images)…
(continued from top of gallery)…is the dark blue dome of the sky which stretches without interruption from east to west, north to south. On any clear day, you can stand on a mesa and see 100 miles of sandy plains. Sunset lasts far longer than in heavily wooded cypress groves. Sand renders eerie colors in the desert sunset. Metal grey storm clouds splay out orangey auroras across inky blue sky in late afternoon. Suddenly the storm clears and a rainbow splays its streamers across the empty blueness.
